Grow These 7 Herbs on Your Balcony for a Healthy Diet

22 September 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : A small balcony can become a useful home garden with a few easy-to-grow herbs. While no herb can guarantee stronger immunity or prevent infections, many herbs contain vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that can be part of a balanced, nutritious diet.

Here are seven herbs that can be grown in containers and regularly added to meals or drinks.

1. Tulsi

Tulsi, also known as holy basil, grows well in warm conditions and can thrive in a sunny balcony.

Its leaves contain various plant compounds and are traditionally used in Indian households in herbal drinks and preparations. Fresh tulsi can be added to tea or used in small quantities in food.

2. Mint

Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow in a pot. It prefers sunlight or partial shade and needs regular watering.

Fresh mint provides small amounts of vitamins and minerals and contains aromatic compounds. It can be added to chutneys, salads, raita, lemonade and other drinks.

3. Coriander

Coriander is particularly convenient for balcony gardening because it can be harvested repeatedly.

The fresh leaves can add flavour to dals, curries, chutneys and salads while contributing small amounts of vitamin C, vitamin K and other nutrients to the diet.

4. Curry Leaves

The curry leaf plant can be grown in a sufficiently large container with good sunlight.

Curry leaves are widely used in Indian cooking and contain several plant compounds and micronutrients. Adding them to everyday dishes is an easy way to increase the variety of plant foods in the diet.

5. Lemongrass

Lemongrass grows well in warm weather and can be cultivated in a relatively large pot.

It is commonly used to prepare herbal infusions and flavour foods. Its characteristic aroma comes from compounds such as citral.

6. Rosemary

Rosemary prefers plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil, making it suitable for a sunny balcony.

It contains antioxidant plant compounds and can be used to flavour vegetables, soups and other dishes. Because it has a strong flavour, only a small amount is generally needed.

7. Oregano

Oregano can be grown in containers and generally prefers good sunlight and well-drained soil.

The herb contains aromatic and antioxidant compounds and can be used in salads, soups, vegetables and other dishes.

Do These Herbs Really Boost Immunity?

The phrase “boost immunity” can be misleading.

The immune system is complex, and no single herb can dramatically strengthen it or guarantee protection from infections. Good nutrition instead supports normal immune function.

A healthy diet containing adequate protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and essential micronutrients, along with sufficient sleep, physical activity and recommended vaccinations, plays a much more important role in maintaining overall health.

How to Grow Herbs in a Balcony Garden

Most herbs need a few basic things:

  • Pots with drainage holes.
  • Good-quality, well-draining soil.
  • Adequate sunlight.
  • Regular but appropriate watering.
  • Occasional trimming to encourage fresh growth.
  • Protection from excessive rain and waterlogging.

Avoid overwatering, as constantly wet soil can damage roots and encourage fungal problems.

A Simple Way to Add More Plants to Your Diet

Growing herbs at home can make fresh ingredients easily available and encourage people to include more plant-based foods in everyday meals.

Instead of viewing these herbs as medicines or guaranteed immunity boosters, they are better considered nutritious and flavourful additions to a varied diet.
