SGPC Says Guru Granth Sahib Saroops Sent to Canada in Full Compliance With Sikh Rehat Maryada

13 july 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :    The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has stated that Guru Granth Sahib saroops sent to Canada were transported in strict accordance with the Sikh Rehat Maryada, rejecting concerns over any alleged violation of religious protocols.

According to the SGPC, every stage of the shipment—from preparation and packing to transportation and delivery—was carried out while adhering to the established Sikh code of conduct and traditions governing the handling of the holy scripture.

SGPC Clarifies Procedure

The SGPC said the saroops were dispatched only after following prescribed religious practices. It maintained that the transportation process respected the sanctity of Guru Granth Sahib and complied with all guidelines laid down under the Sikh Rehat Maryada.

Officials added that the shipment was intended to meet the religious needs of Sikh congregations in Canada.

Response to Concerns

The clarification comes amid questions raised by some individuals and Sikh groups regarding the manner in which the holy scriptures were transported overseas.

The SGPC asserted that no compromise was made with religious principles and that all necessary precautions were observed throughout the process.

Importance of Rehat Maryada

The Sikh Rehat Maryada serves as the accepted code of conduct for Sikhs and outlines the proper procedures for the installation, handling, transportation, and respect of Guru Granth Sahib.

Religious authorities emphasize that adherence to these guidelines is essential to preserve the sanctity and dignity of Sikhism’s eternal Guru.

Serving the Sikh Diaspora

The SGPC said it regularly facilitates the supply of Guru Granth Sahib saroops to gurdwaras and Sikh communities across the world to meet growing religious requirements.

It reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every such shipment is conducted with utmost reverence and in accordance with Sikh religious traditions.
