 4 Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :   A new study has found that prolonged exposure to extreme heat during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of adverse birth outcomes, raising concerns as heatwaves become more frequent due to climate change.

Researchers say expectant mothers may face higher health risks during periods of sustained high temperatures, highlighting the need for preventive measures and greater public health awareness.

Higher Temperatures May Affect Pregnancy

According to the study, extended exposure to excessive heat was linked to outcomes such as:

Preterm birth.

Low birth weight.

Small size for gestational age.

Other pregnancy-related complications.

Researchers noted that the risks appeared to increase with the duration and intensity of heat exposure.

Why Heat Can Be Harmful

Experts believe extreme heat can place additional stress on the mother’s body by causing dehydration, increasing cardiovascular strain and affecting blood flow to the placenta, potentially influencing fetal development.

However, they emphasised that further research is needed to better understand the biological mechanisms involved.
