Why Is the Stock Market Closed Today — And Will It Open Tomorrow on Holi? Explained

3 March 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Indian stock markets are closed today on account of the festival of Holi. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India have listed Holi as an official trading holiday in their annual calendar, which means there is no activity across equity, derivatives, currency, and most commodity segments for the day.

Holi is one of India’s major festivals and is observed nationwide, leading to closure of financial institutions, banks, and markets. The exchanges schedule such holidays well in advance and notify traders and investors at the start of each financial year. Since Holi falls on a weekday this time, trading has been suspended for the full session.

As for tomorrow, the markets are expected to reopen and function as per their regular trading hours unless otherwise notified by the exchanges. The standard trading session will begin at 9:15 AM IST with the usual pre-open session before that. There is no indication of an extended holiday, so normal operations are likely to resume immediately after the Holi break.

Festival-related market closures generally do not have any long-term impact, but traders often watch global cues closely when markets reopen, as international developments during the holiday can influence opening trends. Investors are advised to check official exchange announcements for any last-minute updates, but as per the current holiday schedule, trading will continue normally from the next working day.

Summary

Indian stock markets are closed today due to the Holi festival holiday. Trading on BSE and NSE will resume tomorrow during regular hours, with all segments expected to function normally.
