4 November 2026 (Navroze Bureau) The 2026 US midterm elections have delivered significant gains for the Democratic Party, with several closely watched races shifting in its favour as votes continued to be counted on Wednesday. Democrats flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in North Carolina and secured victories in Georgia and New Hampshire, while also performing strongly in competitive House contests.
The results could reshape the balance of power in Congress during the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term. However, the final control of both chambers remained uncertain as counting continued in several key races.
One of the notable outcomes for the Indian-American community was the victory of Democrat Pia Dandiya in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District. The Associated Press reported on November 4 that Dandiya had won the election, defeating Republican candidate Casey Askar.
Democrats make gains in key Senate races
Democrats recorded an important breakthrough in North Carolina, where former governor Roy Cooper defeated Trump-backed Republican Michael Whatley in the race for the US Senate. The victory flipped a seat previously held by Republicans.
In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election after defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins. In New Hampshire, Democrat Chris Pappas retained the state’s open Senate seat by defeating Republican John Sununu.
These results strengthened the Democratic position in the Senate contest. However, the overall balance of power was not yet settled, with other competitive races still being counted.
Republican Senator Ashley Moody, meanwhile, held her Florida seat against Democratic challenger Angie Nixon, although the margin was narrower than the state’s recent presidential election result.
Democrats show strength in House contests
The House of Representatives also emerged as a major battleground in the midterms. All 435 seats were contested, and Democrats entered Election Day needing a net gain of four seats to take control, according to the pre-election seat count reported by Moneycontrol.
Democrats performed strongly in several competitive districts, including parts of Florida where Republican lawmakers had redrawn congressional boundaries earlier in the year.
Reuters reported that Democrats retained three Florida House districts that Republicans had redrawn. The party was also favoured in the overall House contest as vote counting continued, although millions of ballots remained uncounted at the time of its report.
The outcome of several closely contested races will determine whether Democrats can secure the majority in the chamber.
Indian-origin Pia Dandiya wins Florida seat
Pia Dandiya’s victory in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District was among the notable results of the election. She defeated Republican Casey Askar in the newly drawn South Florida constituency.
Dandiya, a former teacher and school principal, is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was born and raised in Palm Beach County, Florida. Before entering electoral politics, she worked in education and public policy and also served as a White House Fellow.
Her campaign focused on issues including the cost of living, education, healthcare and economic opportunities for families.
The contest had attracted attention because the district was redrawn ahead of the election, bringing together areas across parts of Palm Beach, Broward, Hendry and Collier counties.
Dandiya’s win adds another Indian-origin representative to the US political landscape and is being closely followed by the Indian-American community.
Other Indian-American candidates in the spotlight
Several other Indian-American candidates also featured prominently in the 2026 midterm elections.
Democrat Suhas Subramanyam was projected to win re-election in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, while Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller was projected to secure another term alongside Governor Wes Moore.
In Ohio, Indian-origin Republican Vivek Ramaswamy was trailing Democratic candidate Amy Acton in the governor’s race in early results reported by IANS. The contest had not been called at that stage.
Other Indian-American candidates were also contesting congressional, state legislative and statewide offices across the country.
What happens next?
The midterm elections determine the composition of Congress halfway through a presidential term. The House has 435 voting members, while the Senate has 100 seats, with 35 Senate seats contested in the 2026 election.
A change in control of either chamber could affect the administration’s ability to advance legislation, approve appointments and shape congressional oversight.
With several races still being counted, the final balance of power will depend on the remaining results. For now, Democratic gains in key Senate contests and their performance in competitive House districts have made the 2026 midterms a significant political test for the Trump administration.
