4 November 2026 (Navroze Bureau) Indian stock markets are likely to begin Wednesday’s trading session on a cautious note, with GIFT Nifty signalling a muted-to-negative opening for the Sensex and Nifty 50. Weakness across several Asian markets and uncertainty surrounding the US midterm election results have affected global investor sentiment.
GIFT Nifty was trading around 23,710 in early morning trade, down approximately 50 points or 0.21%, indicating a potentially weaker start for domestic benchmark indices. Investors are also assessing whether the strong rally seen in Indian equities over the previous four sessions can continue.
Sensex and Nifty Extend Four-Day Winning Streak
Indian benchmark indices ended Tuesday’s session with strong gains, extending their winning streak to four consecutive trading days.
The BSE Sensex surged 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, to close at 76,917.85. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to settle at 23,810.85.
Buying interest across automobile, FMCG, real estate and private banking stocks supported the rally. Strong quarterly earnings, easing crude oil prices and renewed foreign investor participation also helped improve market sentiment.
However, after four sessions of gains, investors may look to book profits, particularly if global markets remain under pressure.
US Midterm Election Results Affect Global Sentiment
The US midterm election results have emerged as an important factor influencing global financial markets. Early results indicated gains for Democratic candidates, raising expectations of a possible shift in control of Congress.
Investors are assessing how a change in the balance of power in Washington could affect the policy agenda of US President Donald Trump, particularly in areas such as taxation, regulation, government spending and technology-related policies.
US stock futures weakened as the election results emerged. Concerns about potential political gridlock and uncertainty over future policy decisions contributed to cautious trading.
The impact was also visible in Asian markets, where several major indices reversed their earlier gains.
Asian Markets Trade Under Pressure
Asian equities showed a mixed-to-negative trend during Wednesday’s early trading session. Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi came under pressure, while other regional markets recorded relatively modest movements.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index also declined, reflecting the cautious mood among investors.
The movement in Asian markets is important for Indian equities because global risk appetite, foreign investment flows and movements in international indices often influence domestic trading sentiment.
Investors will continue monitoring developments in the US, along with movements in global technology stocks and bond yields.
Foreign Investor Buying Provides Some Support
Despite uncertainty in international markets, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued buying Indian equities.
According to provisional exchange data, foreign investors purchased shares worth approximately ₹6,836 crore on November 3. This marked their third consecutive session of net buying.
Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, remained net sellers, offloading equities worth around ₹3,678 crore during the same session.
The return of foreign buying has supported the recent recovery in Indian markets. Market participants will watch whether this trend continues during Wednesday’s session.
Crude Oil Prices and Rupee Also in Focus
Crude oil prices remain another important factor for the Indian stock market. As India imports a substantial portion of its oil requirements, changes in international crude prices can influence inflation, the country’s import bill and corporate costs.
Brent crude was trading near the $103-per-barrel mark in early Wednesday trade, after easing from recent levels. Lower oil prices could offer some relief to Indian markets, although geopolitical developments and uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations remain important risks.
The Indian rupee is also expected to remain in focus. Renewed foreign equity inflows and a weaker US dollar could provide support to the domestic currency.
What Investors May Watch on Wednesday
Market participants are likely to track GIFT Nifty, Asian market movements, crude oil prices, foreign institutional investor activity and developments from the US election.
Corporate earnings and stock-specific announcements may also influence individual shares during the session.
While the recent four-day rally has improved domestic market sentiment, weakness in global markets could encourage investors to remain cautious. The actual direction of the Sensex and Nifty will depend on buying and selling activity after the opening bell.
The market outlook remains sensitive to global political developments and international financial trends. Investors should therefore distinguish between early-market indicators and the actual movement of benchmark indices during the trading session.
