Punjab May 2025: Amid the ongoing dispute over water between Punjab and Haryana, farmers have made a major announcement. Meanwhile, a significant statement has come from senior farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal at the Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh. Farmer leader Rajewal stated that after the paddy sowing is completed, they will begin protests for Punjab’s water rights. He said they will demand the cancellation of all water agreements made by the state so far, as every agreement can be renegotiated after 25 years. He urged the Punjab government to cancel all such agreements and demand a reconsideration.
Rajewal further said that, “We are emotional people, and we gave away all our water for free to end the food crisis in the country. Today, when the water level in the state is dropping rapidly, the only hope for our people’s survival is the river water here. But unfortunately, every government in this country has always made agreements to loot Punjab’s water.” He demanded that the central government ensure clean canal water reaches every home and farm in Punjab and compensate for all the free water taken from Punjab until now.
Summary: Punjab farmers oppose BBMB’s decision to release 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana, citing overuse and potential harm to Punjab’s agriculture and water resources.
