BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw Returns to India After 21 Days in Pakistan Custody

Amritsar 14 May 2025 : A major development has emerged where Pakistan has returned a BSF soldier. After the ceasefire, the officers of the Pakistan Rangers handed over BSF soldier Purnima Kumar Sahu (PK) to BSF officials at the joint check post at the Attari border.

According to reports, before the ceasefire, Purnima Kumar accidentally crossed the border and entered Pakistani territory, where he was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers. During this time, hostilities between India and Pakistan had started, and Pakistan was not returning Purnima Kumar. However, Pakistan has now made a gesture of friendship, and the Indian government has welcomed the return of Purnima Kumar.

Under the agreement between India and Pakistan regarding the exchange of prisoners, anyone—whether a civilian or a military personnel—who accidentally crosses the border and does not carry any objectionable material is supposed to be returned. It is worth noting that BSF soldier Purnima Kumar was stationed in the Firozpur sector and had accidentally crossed into Pakistani territory on April 23 while he was on duty to protect farmers working in the fields. During this, he inadvertently crossed the border, and the Pakistani Rangers arrested him. Meanwhile, Purnima Kumar’s wife, Rajni, had appealed to Mamata Banerjee for the release of her husband.

Summary: A BSF soldier, Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was detained by Pakistan Rangers for 21 days, was repatriated to India following a ceasefire agreement.
