FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026: Latest Updated Standings and India’s Qualification Race

18  Aug 2026 (Navroze Bureau) :   The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 is underway in Belgium and the Netherlands, with 16 teams competing across four pools. India are placed in Pool D alongside England, Wales and Pakistan.

India’s Campaign So Far

India started their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales, with captain Harmanpreet Singh scoring twice from penalty corners and Sanjay contributing the opening goal.

India then faced a tough test against England and suffered a 2-4 defeat. England scored twice late in the match to complete the comeback and extend their unbeaten World Cup record against India.

England Lead Pool D

England have made the strongest start in Pool D, winning both of their opening matches and moving to six points.

India have three points from two games, while Wales and Pakistan remain behind them. The latest standings leave India needing a strong result in their next fixture to strengthen their qualification chances.

India vs Pakistan Next

India will face Pakistan on August 19 at 6:30 PM IST in a crucial Pool D encounter.

The match carries major significance because India need points to keep their progress to the next stage on track. Pakistan will also be under pressure after losing their opening game to England.

Harmanpreet Remains Key to India’s Attack

Harmanpreet Singh continues to be one of India’s most important attacking players, particularly from penalty corners.

His two goals against Wales helped India make a winning start, but the defeat to England highlighted the need for greater defensive consistency and improved finishing.

New World Cup Format

The 2026 tournament features a revised format. Instead of traditional quarter-finals immediately following the pool stage, teams will play crossover matches before the semi-final stage, making every pool match important for determining the route to the title.

What India Need Now

India’s immediate objective is to bounce back against Pakistan. A victory would strengthen their position and provide momentum heading into the final stage of the pool campaign.

The team will also need to improve its defensive structure after conceding four goals against England.
