Malerkotla, August 3:
Under the directions of the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development, Punjab, and the guidance of District Programme Officer Pradeep Singh Gill, God Bharai (traditional baby shower) ceremonies were organized for pregnant women at various Anganwadi Centres across Malerkotla district.
On this occasion, pregnant women and their family members were provided with detailed information about maternal and child health, nutrition, and proper care during pregnancy.
Anganwadi workers encouraged the pregnant women to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, undergo regular health check-ups, take iron and calcium supplements as prescribed, and give preference to institutional deliveries. They explained that the first 1,000 days, from pregnancy until the child reaches approximately two years of age, are crucial for the child’s physical, mental, and cognitive development. Therefore, it is essential to ensure proper nutrition, necessary healthcare services, and a safe environment for both the mother and the child during this period.
The women were also made aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after birth, followed by the introduction of age-appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding. In addition, they were encouraged to focus on proper nutrition, hygiene, immunization, and to make full use of government healthcare services.
Officials stated that the objective of such awareness programmes organized at Anganwadi Centres is to improve the health and nutritional status of pregnant women and children and to contribute to the development of a healthier society. They also appealed to the public to take maximum advantage of the maternal and child welfare schemes being implemented by the department.
