Oil Prices Edge Higher as Traders Weigh Russia-Ukraine Peace Prospects Against Supply Fears

22 October 2026 (Navroze Bureau) Global oil prices edged higher as traders weighed possible diplomatic progress between Russia and Ukraine against persistent concerns over global energy supplies. Market sentiment remained uncertain as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a larger-than-expected decline in US crude inventories continued to influence prices.

On Wednesday, October 21, Brent crude futures rose during trading, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also recorded modest gains at certain points of the session. Market participants remained cautious as developments in Russia-Ukraine relations offered some hope of easing supply pressures, while ongoing conflicts raised concerns about disruptions to oil shipments.

Russia-Ukraine Talks Remain in Focus

Developments surrounding possible Russia-Ukraine peace talks remained an important factor for oil traders. Reports of renewed diplomatic engagement raised expectations that an agreement could eventually ease some restrictions and improve the availability of energy supplies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly discussed the Ukraine conflict with US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said he had held discussions with the US envoy.

Any meaningful progress towards ending the conflict could influence oil and fuel markets, particularly if it improves the outlook for Russian energy exports and diesel supplies.

However, traders remain uncertain about the pace of negotiations and whether diplomatic discussions will lead to a concrete agreement.

Middle East Tensions Raise Supply Concerns

At the same time, continuing tensions in the Middle East have kept energy markets on alert. Concerns over attacks on commercial vessels and possible disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to fears of tighter global oil supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route for international energy markets. Any prolonged disruption in the area could affect the movement of crude oil and petroleum products, putting additional upward pressure on prices.

The continuing conflict involving Iran and regional groups has added another layer of uncertainty for oil traders. Market participants are closely monitoring developments that could affect shipping routes, production and exports from the region.

US Crude Inventories Fall More Than Expected

Fresh US inventory data also supported oil prices. According to the US Energy Information Administration, commercial crude oil inventories fell by approximately 3.1 million barrels in the week ending October 16, reaching around 412.5 million barrels.

The decline was larger than analysts had anticipated and indicated stronger-than-expected tightening in crude inventories.

Lower inventories can support oil prices because they suggest that less crude is available in storage to meet demand. However, the overall market outlook also depends on refinery activity, fuel consumption, production levels and developments in international trade.

Brent and WTI Prices

During Wednesday’s trading session, Brent crude futures for December delivery rose around 0.6% to approximately $109.52 per barrel, while US WTI crude futures increased around 0.4% to approximately $97.53 per barrel, according to market reports.

Prices fluctuated as traders assessed competing developments, including hopes of diplomatic progress and concerns about supply disruptions.

These figures reflect prices reported during the specified trading session and should not be treated as live market quotations.

What Could Drive Oil Prices Next?

Oil prices are likely to remain sensitive to geopolitical developments, changes in US inventories and signals about global demand.

Progress towards a Russia-Ukraine settlement could reduce some concerns over energy supplies, while further escalation in the Middle East could increase the risk of shipping disruptions.

Investors will also monitor upcoming inventory reports, production trends and official statements from countries involved in the conflicts.
