18 June 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has rejected accusations that Taiwan is provoking China, insisting that the island’s efforts to strengthen its defenses are aimed solely at protecting its democracy and maintaining regional stability. At the same time, he expressed hope that a new U.S. arms sales package would receive approval in the near future.
‘Taiwan Is Not Provoking Anyone’
Speaking in Taipei, Lai said Taiwan’s refusal to accept rule by China’s Communist Party and its efforts to improve national defense should not be viewed as provocative actions. He stressed that Taiwan seeks peace and remains open to dialogue based on mutual respect.
China regards Taiwan as its territory and has repeatedly criticized Lai, whom Beijing describes as a separatist. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s sovereignty claims, maintaining that only the island’s people can determine their future.
Hope For New U.S. Arms Package
Lai said he hopes a proposed new U.S. arms package can be approved soon, emphasizing that Taiwan must continue strengthening its self-defense capabilities amid increasing military pressure from China.
The package under consideration is reportedly worth about $14 billion and would supplement an earlier U.S. arms package valued at $11 billion approved in late 2025.
Defense Spending Debate
The Taiwanese government has faced domestic political challenges after parliament approved only part of a proposed supplementary defense budget. Funding for some locally developed drones and missile systems was reduced, prompting Lai to push for alternative measures to strengthen Taiwan’s military preparedness.
A new defense proposal worth approximately $6.66 billion has since been introduced, focusing on surveillance systems and coastal defense capabilities.
U.S.-China-Taiwan Tensions
The issue remains a major point of friction between the United States and China. While Washington does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, U.S. law requires support for Taiwan’s self-defense. Beijing strongly opposes American weapons sales to the island and views them as interference in its internal affairs.
Recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump indicating that he is still reviewing the arms package have added uncertainty, though Taiwanese officials say they remain optimistic about eventual approval.
Regional Security Concerns
Lai argued that stronger defensive capabilities contribute to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He said Taiwan remains committed to deterrence and regional security while avoiding actions that could escalate tensions.
Key Takeaway
President Lai Ching-te has insisted that Taiwan is not provoking China and is merely exercising its right to self-defense. He expressed hope that a new U.S. arms package will be approved soon as Taiwan seeks to bolster its security amid growing military pressure from Beijing.
