23 july 2026 (Navroze Bureau) : The NIFTY50 is likely to face a cautious start on Thursday, July 23, after GIFT Nifty indicated a lower opening amid concerns over the prolonged US-Iran conflict, elevated crude oil prices and broader geopolitical uncertainty. GIFT Nifty was trading around 23,882, signalling a discount of nearly 106 points to the previous futures close.
The key question for traders is whether the index can reclaim and sustain the crucial 24,000 mark after recent selling pressure.
Nifty Technical Setup Remains Weak
The NIFTY50 formed a strong bearish candle on the daily chart, indicating continued selling pressure. Analysts said the index has entered a weaker phase after slipping below key moving averages and breaking an important rising trendline.
For a meaningful recovery, the index will need to reclaim the 24,000–24,200 zone and sustain above it. A decisive move above this area could improve sentiment and open the door for a stronger rebound.
23,800 Emerges as Crucial Support
Technical analysts have identified the 23,750–23,800 zone as an important support area for the Nifty. A sustained hold above this zone could provide the base for a bounce-back attempt.
However, a decisive break below 23,800 could increase selling pressure and signal further weakness in the near term.
Oil Prices and Middle East Tensions in Focus
Rising crude oil prices remain a major concern for Indian markets. Higher oil prices can put pressure on India’s import bill, inflation and the rupee.
The prolonged US-Iran conflict has added to uncertainty in global markets, with investors closely monitoring developments that could affect energy supplies and the wider geopolitical environment.
Banking Stocks Could Influence Market Direction
Banking stocks have recently contributed to market weakness, with heavy selling in major lenders weighing on the benchmark index.
A recovery in heavyweight banking and financial stocks could be important if Nifty attempts to reclaim the 24,000 level. Continued weakness in the banking sector, however, could make any rebound difficult.
Key Levels to Watch
- Support: 23,750–23,800
- Immediate hurdle: 24,000
- Resistance: 24,200–24,300
- Bullish trigger: Sustained move above 24,200
- Bearish signal: Decisive break below 23,800
Can Nifty Bounce Back Above 24,000?
A recovery above 24,000 remains possible, but the index needs strong buying support and a sustained move above the immediate resistance zone to confirm a meaningful rebound.
For now, the market bias remains cautious to weak, with crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, foreign fund flows and heavyweight banking stocks likely to influence the day’s direction.
