Similarly, at Balluana village, watercourses have been expanded at a cost of ₹2.68 crore. Under the project, the width of the watercourses has been increased from 4 inches to 9 inches. This work has benefited approximately 1,581 acres of agricultural land.
Mr. Barinder Goyal said that the Punjab Government is undertaking large-scale efforts to ensure the availability of canal water to farmers’ fields and strengthen the canal irrigation system. The works undertaken at Channan Khera and Balluana are an important step in this direction and will directly benefit a total of 25,000 acres of agricultural land.
He said that increasing the capacity of watercourses and constructing new irrigation outlets would make the distribution of canal water to agricultural fields more systematic and effective. This would help ensure that farmers receive the required irrigation water on time and would also boost agricultural production.
The Irrigation Minister said that the government’s primary objective is to ensure the equitable and efficient distribution of canal water. Along with strengthening the existing irrigation infrastructure, new watercourses, outlets and other irrigation facilities are being constructed wherever required.
He directed officials to ensure that all ongoing irrigation projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe and according to prescribed quality standards, so that farmers can derive maximum benefit from government projects.
